This fan remake is quite frankly one of the most impressive pieces of fan-made content that I think I have ever seen. I genuinely enjoy the new Tomb Raider games but I have to say that Crystal Dynamics should seriously be taking notes from Nicobass and their team. As a gaming nerd who spent many an hour on the game in my childhood, I can safely say that this is mind blowing stuff. I have never been more surprised by what dedicated fans are capable of than I have been with what I have seen of this remake. You can see the dust rising from the ground as Lara rides her quad bike and the intricate detailing of the brickwork on the front of Croft Manor. These images perfectly represent what a good remake should do: it reminds us of the original and why we loved it so much but it also brings a new and contemporary twist to the source material that revitalises it and brings it into the ever evolving world of modern gaming. I would also do the obligatory locking of the elderly butler inside the walk in freezer as I- much like you, dear reader- am apparently a heartless monster with no respect for the elderly. I remember when I was little I would spend hours just running around the obstacle course because I wasn’t very good at the main game. The images Nicobass posted are of Lara on her quad bike and standing in front of Croft Manor. This is my contribution for the TR3 month, even if it’s from my TR2 remake, many elements of the Croft Manor like the quad bike race are directly inspired by TR3 #TR25 #TombRaider /SDMMOG8ynd- Nicobass April 8, 2021 Nicobass-the creator of the remake- recently posted some new images on their Twitter and the nostalgia they evoke is real. More than five years in the making, this remake is a gargantuan project that looks set to completely remake the 1997 PlayStation One classic Tomb Raider 2– one of the best received titles in the series-and the progress has been incredible so far. The Tomb Raider 2 Daggers of Xian demo is available for download on PC now, and more is sure to come. It’s nice to see the “big guys” letting fans have a little fun with the games they love. Nicobass also claims that he has been in contact with Crystal Dynamics and is not accepting any donations for the Tomb Raider 2 project, as per Crystal Dynamics’ conditions to allow the project to continue. Nicobass’ remake is not anything like Crystal Dynamics‘ relaunch of the franchise in terms of graphical quality, but there’s no mistaking the talent being implemented in the project. This means that the stages won’t be an exact copy of the originals, but will be more streamlined for a more modern gaming experience. Nico claims that he has redesigned the levels to make them feel like they fit into today’s gaming standards. What’s even more impressive than the above trailer is that the team has released a downloadable demo for the first level of the game titled Daggers of Xian. This is the classic first level in Tomb Raider 2, and takes place along The Great Wall of China. You can see for yourself how amazing the project is starting to look in the video below: The franchise’s protagonist, Lara Croft, looks just like we remember her, only less polygonal. Project creator Nicobass has been hard at work for almost two years remaking classic PSOne title Tomb Raider 2. The small group is using the original game as more of a guideline, using some of the original’s assets as well as taking a few liberties of their own. Such is the case with a small group of fans that are currently working on a Tomb Raider 2 remake using Unreal Engine 4. While it may annoy some, others enjoy revisiting the games and movies from our childhoods, but with today’s technological advances implemented into them. We live in an era chock-full of remakes, reboots, and re-releases.
